Turkish automobile giant Karsan working on electric bus with BMW battery packs
Turkish vehicle maker Karsan has introduced a new electric bus --- the Atak Electric. The bus is a battery-electric version of Karsan’s Atak 8-meter bus.
In presenting its new Atak Electric bus, Karsan said that the bus is powered by battery packs from German automaker BMW’s i3 electric car. Karsan is already using the BMW battery technology in its smaller, 6-metre electric bus called the Jest Electric.
According to the details released by Karsan about its new e-bus Atak Electric, the bus is outfitted with five BMW batteries, with the capacity of each battery being 44 kWh. The total 220 kWh battery capacity gives the e-bus a driving range of 300 km. Karsan also said that the engine of the Atak Electric can deliver a 230 kW total output, and has been designed for 2400 Nm torque.
With regard to charging, Karsan has said that the Atak Electric bus takes five hours of charging time for double AC charging and three hours of charging time for DC rapid charging. Nearly one-quarter of the battery can get recharged while driving, thanks to the vehicle’s regenerative braking system.
Revealing that the 8-metre Atak Electric bus has the capacity to accommodate 52 passengers, Karsan said that the electric bus will be available in two seating configurations --- 18 seats and four folding seats; and 21 seats and four folding seats.
The serial production of the Atak Electric bus will be commenced by Karsan in August 2019.
